Vitamin D & Breast Cancer Prevention Vitamin D: Essential in Battle with Breast Cancer A series of new studies were released recently which find that having increased levels of Vitamin D will significantly reduce your chances of developing cancer later in life. Most notably, a study at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto focused on breast cancer and women who had various levels of vitamin D during puberty. These results were presented at the 97th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in early April. “Current thinking is that exposures during adolescence or before a full-term pregnancy may have a greater effect, as that is when breast tissue is going through the most rapid development,” said Julia A. Knight, PhD of Mount Sinai. Knight asked questions of participants aged 20-59 regarding amounts of sun exposure and diet habits. Results showed that women who worked outdoors or had other extensive outdoor activities reduced their risk of breast cancer by up to 40%, controlling for other factors. Although Vitamin D is obtainable through milk, cod liver oil and salmon, the amount of each of these products one would have to consume to achieve recommended levels, which are associated with lower cancer risk, is unrealistic. An 8-glass of milk contains only 100 IU of vitamin D. Alternatively, with 10-15 minutes UV exposure one can easily obtain 2,000-5,000 IU of Vitamin D. Current recommendations for Vitamin D are at 200-400 International Units (IU) of Vitamin D daily depending on age, but research shows these levels are much too low. Researchers are urging these doses be increased to 2000 IU of vitamin D daily as those are the levels at which decreased cancer rates are seen. http://www.webmd.com/content/Article/120/113900.htm?pagenumber=2
